Campaign to Stop Marine Wildlife Feeding

The issue of most immediate concern to the Marine Safety Group is to protect marine wildlife and people in Florida's coastal seas by seeing that the current practice of people feeding sharks, fishes and other marine wildlife to enhance viewing or other so-called "interactive experiences" is no longer permitted.

Despite operating for three years without any external financial support, and opposed by a multi-million dollar industry with well-established, extensive political and media connections, our efforts have now brought the safety and conservation issues tied to marine "interactive diving" to the mainstream of public consciousness. Recent media coverage of shark-feeding dive operations have been undertaken by no less than NBC's Dateline, CNN, Time Magazine, National Public Radio and a number of major metropolitan newspapers, with more to follow. The State of Florida, in direct response to a petition by the Marine Safety Group's founders, are now considering statewide regulation of marine wildlife feeding.

While the Marine Safety Group spearheaded and continues to lead this effort, we are by no means alone. "Many of the most respected environmental, marine conservation, animal protection AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT organizations in the U.S., have GONE ON RECORD WITH THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION IN support of our PETITION TO BAN MARINE WILDLIFE FEEDING BY DIVERS, including:
